Puerto Rico’s health authorities reported their first case of the omicron variant  of the coronavirus.

The spokeswoman for the Department of Health of Puerto Rico, Lisdián Acevedo, said that “as has been well explained, the confirmed case responds to a person who recently traveled from the state of Florida The person has not required hospitalization and the symptoms reflected are mild moderate, “he said, reported ElNacional.

The specialist also noted that “it is important to emphasize that the person has completed the vaccine cycle.”

Detection in time

“We are waiting to know the results of two tests sent to be sequenced that belong to the same family nucleus,” added the spokeswoman.

He explained that the positive case is the result of genomic surveillance maintained by the agency, in collaboration with the Puerto Rico Public Health Trust, the office of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in San Juan.

As well as the Ponce Health Sciences University and the Institute of Public Health Laboratories of Puerto Rico.

He emphasized that “the effectiveness of the vaccines decreases over time and with the new variant it is a priority that all citizens administer the booster dose.”

“We urge the public to continue with protection measures against the coronavirus,” he said.

As of Friday, according to the local DS, 87.6% of the population in Puerto Rico had received at least one dose of the vaccine against covid-19.
