When the 2001 Miami Hurricanes held their fifth national championship in the Rose Bowl locker room 20 years ago, no one yelled “GOAT!” nor did he think they had just achieved legendary status.

The truth is that players and coaches were relieved to have reached the goal they had set for themselves 12 months earlier, ESPN reported.

They were so focused on winning a national championship, so focused on leadership, responsibility and, ridiculous as it may sound now, proving themselves, that at the time it was impossible to assign this team a place in college football history.

Only now, with the perspective of history and time, those who dressed in 2001 understand – and boast – of what they accomplished in a magical season. It goes beyond talent, which speaks for itself: 38 NFL draft picks, including 17 first-round players and at least one Hall of Famer, Ed Reed.

A stacked back room, which featured Frank Gore as number 3. A stacked defensive back room, with Sean Taylor and Antrel Rolle as backup. A stacked defensive line room, with Vince Wilfork as a backup, too.

“I am willing to field our 2001 team against any college, anytime, anywhere,” said center Brett Romberg. “I think our mental strength was as impressive as our physical and athletic ability. We were mentally motivated. When you have guys who are doing workouts, even if it’s hell in July at 115 degrees, like you’re breathing through a sock, and they turn around and do it again for a teammate because they need help, that’s remarkable. . We look at each other, how the hell did we do this? It’s almost as if life doesn’t exist. As if it were a fairy tale ”.

The debate over the best team in college football history will never end, and that’s one of the things we love so much about sports. Of course, the Miami players are going to stand up for their own team and shout from the rooftops that 2001 Miami is the GOAT.
