The  police  had to intervene in a strange incident that occurred in a university residence in Florida. The officers shot a man who attacked the students with a  knife  .

According to the Florida Tech Facebook page, campus security and the Melbourne Police Department responded to a “security threat” at Roberts Hall around 10 pm Friday,  ClickOrlando  reported  .

Melbourne Police said they received 911 calls reporting that a man on campus with a knife was chasing students. It is unclear if the suspect assaulted a student.

Detectives said they cornered the suspect in Roberts Hall, where he pounced on an officer.

Melbourne Police said an MPD officer and a campus security official shot the suspect. Authorities said the suspect was killed.

Florida Tech said no one else was seriously injured and there are no further threats to the campus.

Melbourne Police have not released the identity of the suspect.

Campus officials issued a shelter-in-place warning that was eventually lifted.

The university asked students to avoid Roberts Hall and Campbell Hall due to ongoing police activity.

Florida Tech was founded in 1958 as “Brevard Engineering College”. It all started as an idea in the mind of Jerome P. Keuper, a visionary physicist who works in Cape Canaveral.

As the university would say, Keuper expressed his desire to create a science and technology university to a friend over a drink at a local pub. Hearing the conversation, a fellow patron exchanged 37 cents through the bar and said, “Here’s your first donation, Jerry. Now, go and build that university.

So Keuper did. And what started at 37 cents as a night school for the first “missiles” of the US space program is now a comprehensive national research university recognized worldwide for its excellence in preparing students for future careers.
