Among the multiple park remodeling projects in the city of Miami, the ambitious reconstruction of the Shenandoah Park sports center stands out , for which the municipal commissioner Manolo Reyes managed to raise 9 million dollars, as if it were a savings account.

It should be noted that Shenandoah Park was established in the 1940s, when World War II ended and the neighborhood grew south of SW 16th Street. So workers didn’t earn 15 an hour and things didn’t cost millions of dollars.

In this way, a baseball field, a swimming pool, tennis courts and a library, among other amenities, were gradually built on the 35,000 square meters that make up the land located on 22nd avenue and 18th street from SW, five blocks away. of Coral Way.

Time passes and its harshness is inevitable. “I set out to remodel the park. Gather ideas and get the necessary funds, ”recalled the municipal legislator who began the task at the end of 2017, when he was elected commissioner.

During the long process of proposals, redesign and approval of permits, “there were countless community meetings and 20,000 ideas. Until it was time to seek the consensus of the majority and end the discussions to start the reconstruction. If not, we would still be arguing, ”the commissioner recalled.

Manolo Reyes mentioned “we started with the idea of building a new pool and then we added the plan to remodel the baseball, soccer and tennis fields, as well as the gym and the adjacent green areas, and finally we decided to rebuild everything.”

Meanwhile, the tennis courts have already been remodeled, with new LDT lights, floors, paint and nets. The children’s recreation area, with swings, slides, seesaws and merry-go-rounds, will soon be rebuilt and expanded.

In contrast, the Shenandoah Library, which is located at the southeastern end of the sports park, will not be changed or remodeled as it is managed by Miami-Dade County.

However, the area adjacent to the library will be renovated with a garden, a square and a promenade “where the residents of the area can go for a walk, run, sit down to talk or have a drink”.

In addition, with a view to making better use of the space, the pool will be almost three times larger and an outdoor gym will be enabled. Publication of Diario Las Américas.
