The Miami Police Department registered a record number of applications, so it had to close the selection process in just a few hours.

The reason for this new record is the large recruitment campaign that the department undertook on social networks, including a curious video that quickly became a trend.

YouTube has even recognized the Miami Police Department for surpassing hundreds of thousands of views on its video channel, so it was no surprise that the latest recruitment video became a hit.

In a matter of hours, there were 1,000 applications when the process opened last month. It usually takes weeks. Meanwhile, other police departments took notice, and some contacted the social networking unit for tips.

“Across the country, it seems like in police relations there’s a little bit of confusion, so fortunately we have a great relationship with our community,” said Miami Police Officer Nick Perez.

The idea was simple, highlight the relationship with the community, but talk to real people.

“It had a DJ on top, kind of an Ultra [Music Festival] feel, on top of the world, on top of the building, and it also encompasses that, Vice City, Grand Theft Auto, you know our target demographic is going to be that era,” the officer noted to CBS Miami

Officer Perez is talking about his latest production and heads up the social media unit. Faced with a nationwide drop in applications, he came up with a new idea to engage the community.
