Bishop Silvio Báez suffered firsthand the consequences of the repression in Nicaragua for which he had to go into exile in South Florida in search of safety and protection.

Until April 2019, Báez served as auxiliary bishop of Managua, the Nicaraguan capital, when he denounced the existence of a plan to assassinate him for being critical of the government of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo, reported VOA .

hey had warned him from the United States embassy in the Central American country. The Episcopal Conference had also warned of these threats. All of them from the same source: the Nicaraguan administration.

The Bishop admits that “in the face of what is going to happen in Nicaragua on November 7, there are mixed feelings” due to the feeling that a great opportunity to rebuild the country has been lost.

“There is a feeling of sadness and frustration because the great opportunity to rebuild democracy and to start rebuilding a country that has been left in ruins by those in power has been lost,” he told the VOA .

Nicaragua has “sufficient human, moral and intellectual resources to be able to move the country forward”, although it requires a collective effort.

“I am convinced that in Nicaragua there must be a change because a country cannot be as it is today. This cannot be extended to infinity, but I am also convinced that the change will come from the Nicaraguan ”, stated the Bishop.
