These cases have doubled those of Australia, where there have been 16 incidents regarding the unprovoked bite of sharks, and in 2020 it ranked first with the highest number.

With 1,350 miles of coastline, Florida narrowly outranks Alaska among US states. Similarly, the State Sunshine figure averaged 25 bites a year over half a decade, yet none of these were fatal.

Worldwide figures

The sunny state presented a considerable decrease for three years, but worldwide there were 73 bites of this marine species, representing 38% of the total of 52 in 2021. Motivated by the closure of the beaches due to the pandemic, the figures decreased. The 2021 total was consistent considering the world average over five years with 72 bites.

What do the studies say?

According to a study conducted by the director of the shark research program at the Florida Museum of Natural History, Gavin Naylor, he announced that the figures in Florida are really very average and that “there is no reason to be alarmed at all” with promotions at a general level this year.

Also, the report deduced that most of the incidents have been caused by blacktip sharks, claiming that “they are probably responsible for the majority of bites.”

But that was not the only thing that the study found, as it also pointed out that “51% of the cases worldwide involved surfers or people who practiced board sports, which kept humans away from the coast, where it is sharks are more likely to congregate. Swimmers and waders accounted for 39% of cases,” according to the Sun Sentinel.
