A man was sentenced in a federal court in Florida, United States (USA), to more than 13 years in prison (160 months) for selling methamphetamine and cocaine, among other drugs , through the “dark internet” , which he later distributed secretly. in wax candles.

According to the information issued by the Prosecutor’s Office for the Southern District of Florida, between 2018 and 2020, José Rodolfo Barraza Flores, 26, a resident of Arizona, sold narcotics through accounts he had on portals that operated on the call. “Deep internet” or “invisible”, in transactions paid through the cryptocurrency bitcoin.

Once the purchase was made, the drug was distributed via postal mail by the convicted person.

“To avoid detection, Barraza Flores hid the narcotics inside wax candles, which he melted, molded and packaged inside a trailer in Arizona,” the prosecution added in a statement distributed last Tuesday.

According to the web portal  La Prensa , the sentence imposed by federal magistrate Aileen Cannon, with a court in West Palm Beach, comes after in October last year the defendant pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance and three charges of distribution of a controlled substance.

Dark web or darknet

It is also known as the dark internet, it is part of the Deep web, which are web pages and services that cannot be accessed through traditional search engines (Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo…). The darknet is made up of a set of hidden sites that are accessed through specific browsers, such as Tor. In this way, users can not only reach the websites of the dark web but can also maintain an anonymous and private browsing, since these browsers use different proxy servers so that their IP is difficult to track.

It is for this last reason that the darknet is a shelter for many criminals who use the Internet to offer criminal services and carry out other illegal activities. For example, in September 2020, Europol announced the results of the DisrupTor operation, aimed at buyers and sellers of illegal products on the dark web, reports  Red Seguridad .

However, not everything is negative in this environment. The fact that the browsers used to access the dark web allow private browsing makes it possible to access totally legal sites in countries where there is censorship. Or it simply facilitates anonymous browsing so that the user who wishes can preserve their privacy.
