Miami Dade College is the only public institution of higher education in South Florida currently producing graduates in the field of histotechnology.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the overall employment of medical laboratory technologists and technicians is projected to grow 7 percent from 2019 to 2029 , faster than the average for all occupations.

The increasing aging population is expected to lead to an increased need to diagnose medical conditions, such as cancer or type 2 diabetes, through laboratory procedures.

Other factors driving job growth include the retirement of the aging workforce, increased demand for laboratory services, changes in the practice of laboratory medical science due to technological advances, and increased growth. of the population.

As a result, rapidly advancing knowledge in the field of medical laboratory science is necessary to meet the growing industry need for highly skilled and knowledgeable Histotechnologists.

To enable advancement within the Medical Laboratory profession, Miami Dade College’s School of Health Sciences offers prospective students a Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) in Health Sciences with a concentration in Medical Laboratory Sciences ( BAS-HS-MLS) with two pathways, one for Clinical Laboratory Science technologists and technicians and the other for Histotechnologists to accommodate the unique demands for advancement within the health sciences industry.

This degree would provide graduates with the educational credentials necessary to progress in the workplace. Employment options for BAS-HS-MLS (Histotechnology) program graduates are lucrative and can be found in hospitals; medical consultants; research centers; public and private health laboratories; industrial quality control; veterinary clinics; pharmaceutical laboratories; and sale and service of health equipment.
