Florida congressmen of Cuban origin will present during the next legislative session of 2022 a bill that seeks to declare November 7 as the day of the victims of communism.
The project, presented by Senator Manny Díaz Jr. and Representative to the Lower House David Borrero, will promote the study in schools of the totalitarian regimes of Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela, among others.
Lawmakers announced the proposal Sunday during a meeting with civic leaders at a museum in Hialeah, which honors Brigade 2506 that participated in the failed 1961 invasion of the Bay of Pigs, Cuba, which sought to overthrow Fidel Castro.
They noted that, according to one study, American high school and college students do not know the basic facts and history of communism.
“As a proud son of Cuban exiles, I feel it is my duty to educate new generations about the depraved ideology, history and legacy of communism, and ensure that the millions who suffered are not forgotten , ” said Senator Diaz.
Borrero indicated that Florida is one of the states with the highest concentration of Cuban, Venezuelan and Nicaraguan exiles, who have suffered the consequences of communism.
He assured that the idea is for Florida to honor the sacrifices made by the victims of this ideology and recognize their survivors.
If the bill is approved in both houses and signed by the governor of Florida, Republican Ron DeSantis, each November 7 will be recognized as the “Day of the victims of communism.”
